PYONGYANG: North Korea has unveiled 250 ballistic missile launchers along its southern border, with leader Kim Jong Un describing the new weapons as a “powerful treasured sword” for defending the country’s sovereignty, according to state media reports on Monday. The missile launchers were showcased during a “transferring” ceremony in Pyongyang on Sunday.
Each launcher is capable of holding four missiles, and Kim Jong Un referred to them as an “up-to-date tactical attack weapon,” underscoring their strategic significance. This is the first time North Korea has publicly revealed the scale of such an arms deployment to its border units. Analysts suggest that this large-scale arms transfer might have affected Pyongyang’s capacity to produce an estimated 1,000 missiles, as it may have diverted resources away from missile production.
Relations between North and South Korea are at a low point, with North Korea increasing its weapons testing and launching balloons filled with trash into the South. In response, South Korea has resumed propaganda broadcasts, suspended a military tension-reducing deal, and restarted live-fire drills near the border. North Korea has declared South Korea its “principal enemy,” abandoned reunification agencies, and threatened war over any minor territorial infringements.
