Tebboune outlined a detailed plan for Algeria’s involvement, promising that, should Egypt permit access, Algerian forces would be dispatched to Gaza to aid in reconstruction efforts

ANKARA: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has made a bold pledge to provide military and humanitarian aid to Gaza, contingent upon Egypt’s agreement to open its borders. This commitment marks a significant escalation in Algeria’s support for the Palestinian cause, as Tebboune aims to showcase his country’s readiness to actively contribute to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Addressing a campaign rally in Constantine on August 18, ahead of the September 7 presidential election, Tebboune emphasized Algeria’s unwavering support for Gaza. “We swear by Allah, if they would help us and open the border between Egypt and Gaza, the army is ready (to enter Gaza),” Tebboune declared to a fervent audience. This statement reflects a broader strategic aim to solidify Algeria’s role as a key advocate for Palestinian rights.
Tebboune outlined a detailed plan for Algeria’s involvement, promising that, should Egypt permit access, Algerian forces would be dispatched to Gaza to aid in reconstruction efforts. He pledged that within 20 days, Algeria would establish three hospitals and deploy hundreds of doctors to assist in rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by recent conflicts. “As soon as the borders are open and our trucks are allowed to enter, we will build three hospitals in 20 days, and we will send hundreds of doctors to help rebuild what the Zionists have destroyed,” Tebboune stated.
This pledge underscores Algeria’s deep-rooted solidarity with the Palestinian cause, a stance that has been consistent throughout the escalation of hostilities in Gaza since October 7. Algeria views the situation in Gaza as emblematic of broader struggles against colonialism and occupation. In May, Algeria sought to advance its position on the international stage by submitting a resolution to the United Nations Security Council, calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the violence in Rafah and across the Gaza Strip. Although the resolution was blocked by the United States, Algeria remains resolute in its efforts to champion Palestinian rights within the UN framework.
Tebboune’s rhetoric highlights Algeria’s broader geopolitical strategy, which is informed by its historical experiences of colonialism. Algeria’s support for Palestine is deeply intertwined with its own struggle for independence from French colonial rule. Having endured a brutal war for independence, Algeria has long identified with liberation movements worldwide. In the 1960s, Algeria emerged as a pivotal hub for revolutionary movements, providing sanctuary and support to groups seeking independence across Africa and beyond, including the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
