LAHORE: In a bid to combat worsening smog, the Punjab government has announced new restrictions in several major cities, including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. Shops, shopping malls, and markets will be required to close by 8 p.m., and a ban has been imposed on outdoor dining at restaurants to reduce pollution levels that contribute to smog.
Earlier today, the Lahore High Court sharply criticized the Punjab government for its perceived failure to control smog, highlighting that stubble burning and construction activities remain largely unchecked. The court directed deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners to leave their offices and conduct inspections to ensure compliance with anti-smog regulations.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb expressed regret over the High Court’s remarks, reaffirming that the government is working tirelessly to combat smog. She stated that any shortcomings identified by the court would be addressed to further enhance the effectiveness of these measures.
