NEW YORK: Pakistan has called for resolving the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, urging all parties to exercise political will for a peaceful settlement. At a United Nations Security Council briefing, Pakistan’s envoy emphasized early ceasefire and constructive negotiations as key steps toward ending hostilities.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed deep concern over human suffering caused by the ongoing war. He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at bridging divides and fostering a negotiated resolution.
Ambassador Ahmad also addressed the safety and security of UN peacekeepers, stressing that protecting personnel from emerging technological threats is central to the credibility of UN missions. He noted Pakistan’s long-standing contributions to peacekeeping, with the country remaining among the largest troop and police contributors and having lost 182 personnel under the UN flag.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate with international partners to strengthen peacekeeper safety, stating, “Their protection is a shared responsibility of the international community.” Ahmad emphasized that ensuring security is vital to maintaining the legitimacy and effectiveness of global peacekeeping operations.
