ISLAMABAD: In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, have jointly called for intensified collaboration between their nations. Their recent telephone conversation highlighted a mutual commitment to advancing the progress and prosperity of both Pakistan and Bangladesh, emphasizing the potential for greater regional cooperation to benefit South Asia.
During the phone call, Prime Minister Sharif extended his warm congratulations to Professor Yunus on his recent appointment as Chief Adviser of Bangladesh. This role marks Yunus’s return to a prominent leadership position following his influential work in social entrepreneurship and economic development. Sharif acknowledged Yunus’s impactful contributions to Bangladesh’s socio-economic landscape and expressed heartfelt condolences regarding the devastating floods that have recently struck Bangladesh.
The recent floods have caused extensive damage across the country, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. Sharif’s gesture of sympathy reflects Pakistan’s solidarity with its neighbor during a time of crisis. Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, assumed the role of interim Chief Adviser on August 8, succeeding Sheikh Hasina, who stepped down amid escalating political turmoil. Yunus’s appointment came after significant student-led protests demanding Hasina’s resignation.
His interim government, which includes figures like Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud—key leaders from the student protests—represents a critical transitional phase in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Yunus has pledged to uphold and protect the constitution during his tenure, aiming to stabilize the country and address the demands of the public. Prime Minister Sharif’s conversation with Yunus underscored the importance of revitalizing and strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Sharif emphasized the historical, cultural, and religious ties that bind the two nations and proposed increased cooperation across various sectors, including trade, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people contacts. Sharif’s vision for enhanced collaboration involves not only boosting commercial relations but also fostering greater cultural and academic exchanges. This approach aims to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the bilateral relationship in a holistic manner.
In response, Professor Yunus expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Sharif’s outreach and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering stronger ties between the two countries. Yunus acknowledged the shared history and interests between Pakistan and Bangladesh and highlighted the potential for cooperative efforts to drive regional stability and prosperity.
