KANDY: Pakistan signed off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with a thrilling five-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, but the win was not enough to secure a place in the semi-finals as New Zealand progressed instead.
Set a daunting target of 213, Sri Lanka mounted a spirited chase, finishing on 207 for 6 in their 20 overs. Captain Dasun Shanaka led from the front with an unbeaten 76 from 31 balls, while Pavan Rathnayake contributed 58 from 37 deliveries. Their late onslaught brought the match down to the final over, but Pakistan held their nerve to seal victory.
Earlier, Pakistan had posted 212 for 8 after being put in to bat. Sahibzada Farhan starred with a superb 100 off 60 balls, striking nine fours and five sixes, and was later named player of the match. Fakhar Zaman provided explosive support with 84 from 42 deliveries, the pair sharing a commanding 176-run opening partnership.
The innings lost momentum in the closing overs as Sri Lanka struck back. Dilshan Madushanka returned figures of 3 for 33, while Shanaka claimed two wickets.
In reply, Sri Lanka faltered early but rebuilt through Rathnayake and Shanaka. Abrar Ahmed proved decisive with 3 for 23 in his four overs, while Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah took a wicket each.
Despite ending their campaign on a winning note, Pakistan’s journey in the tournament came to an end, with qualification slipping from their grasp.
Toss: Sri Lanka elected to field first in the Super Eights clash.
