NEW YORK: At the United Nations, Pakistan called for urgent international action to tackle threats emanating from Afghanistan, warning of growing regional and global risks posed by armed groups operating across the border.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a briefing to the UN Security Council on “Threats to International Peace and Security caused by Acts.” He said externally sponsored and foreign-funded proxy groups, including Fitna al Khawarij TTP, Fitna al Hindustan BLA, and its Majeed Brigade, had gained renewed strength in recent years, particularly after the Taliban took control of Kabul.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative added that these organizations operated with near impunity from Afghan soil, often with the active support of Pakistan’s eastern neighbor, and had carried out a series of “heinous attacks” inside Pakistan. He stressed that the threat extended beyond Pakistan.
Ambassador Ahmad cited recent terrorist activity near the Afghan border in Central Asia as evidence of the wider regional danger. He also raised concerns over billions of dollars’ worth of sophisticated weapons and equipment left behind by foreign forces in Afghanistan, warning that without strict control, such arms risked falling into the hands of groups.
Urging accountability, he called on external actors who finance, arm, or support these groups to be held responsible. He said coordinated international action was essential, insisting that unilateral measures alone would be insufficient to tackle a threat that crossed borders and endangered regional stability.
