KARACHI: In a decisive move to bolster the country’s economy, Pakistan has launched a nationwide crackdown against smuggling, targeting essential goods such as wheat flour, sugar, fertiliser, and fuel.
The crackdown aims to address the severe hardships caused by the illegal trade of these crucial commodities and to restore stability within the country’s economic framework. The government’s efforts are focused on ensuring the availability of these goods and protecting public welfare.
During the first week of September, authorities reported substantial seizures across the nation. A total of 126.4 metric tonnes of sugar, 4 metric tonnes of wheat flour, 3,252 cigarette stocks, 58 rolls of fabric, and 0.959 million litres of Iranian fuel were confiscated.
In Karachi, 1,098 cigarette stocks were seized, while in Quetta, 2,154 stocks were captured. Multan saw significant action with the seizure of 120 metric tonnes of sugar and 4 metric tonnes of wheat flour. The city also reported the confiscation of 0.002 million litres of Iranian fuel, alongside 10 rolls of fabric. Quetta’s haul included 0.893 million litres of Iranian fuel and 48 rolls of fabric.
The nationwide crackdown, which began in early September 2023, has led to the following significant seizures:
13,088.75 metric tonnes of fertiliser
3,470.106 metric tonnes of wheat flour
35,091.71 metric tonnes of sugar
4,337,251 cigarette stocks
151,292 rolls of fabric
16.636 million litres of Iranian fuel
Authorities remain committed to continuing these operations to mitigate the economic instability caused by smuggling. This drive is part of a broader strategy to protect the economy and public interests from the adverse effects of illegal trade. The crackdown is ongoing, with officials dedicated to combating smuggling and reinforcing the country’s economic stability.
