ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has successfully launched its first hyperspectral satellite, marking a major milestone in the country’s ambitious space program. The HS-1 satellite was sent into orbit from a launch site in China, with the event broadcast live at the headquarters of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) in Islamabad.

A Suparco spokesperson described the mission as a key achievement under Pakistan’s National Space Policy 2047. They said HS-1 will open new avenues for infrastructure mapping, urban planning, and is expected to bring a “revolution” in agricultural planning and environmental monitoring. The advanced satellite is also designed to aid in predicting floods, landslides, and other natural disasters, providing critical data to enable timely responses.

In addition, HS-1 will support continuous monitoring of climate change, geological hazards, and other environmental factors, strengthening Pakistan’s capacity for disaster preparedness and resource management. Officials stated that the satellite is expected to enter its designated orbit today, followed by a two-month testing phase, after which it will be fully operational.

This launch marks Pakistan’s third satellite deployment this year, following the successful launch of EO-1 and KS-1, both of which remain fully active. Suparco said the mission signals that Pakistan’s space program is “entering a new era of advanced technology and applications,” enhancing its capabilities in earth observation, resource management, and scientific research.

Experts noted that the hyperspectral imaging technology onboard HS-1 will allow for more precise analysis of land use, crop health, and environmental changes, offering policymakers and scientists valuable tools for sustainable development planning.

The successful launch reflects Pakistan’s growing expertise in space technology and international collaboration, reinforcing the country’s commitment to leveraging satellite technology for national development and disaster resilience.
