ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Myanmar on Monday pledged to reinvigorate their bilateral relationship, reaffirming their commitment to deepen multi-sectoral cooperation after a prolonged pause in high-level exchanges.
The two countries expressed their intention to expand collaboration across diverse sectors, including religious tourism, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, trade, economy, science, and academic linkages, with the aim of promoting shared prosperity.
The announcement followed delegation-level talks and a joint press briefing by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Myanmar’s Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Than Swe in Islamabad.
In his remarks, Dar described the discussions as productive and comprehensive. He highlighted the importance of advancing engagement through structured and results-oriented initiatives, particularly in capacity building. He said the visit of Myanmar’s foreign minister reflected the value both countries attach to revitalizing their relations.
Dar stressed that Pakistan and Myanmar enjoy cordial and friendly ties and that Pakistan was keen to enhance cooperation across a wide range of mutually beneficial fields. He emphasized resolving contentious issues through dialogue and diplomacy and called for further deepening of academic linkages.
Noting a gap in high-level visits, Dar said the last Myanmar visit took place in 2015, while Pakistan’s last presidential visit occurred in 2012. He said the bilateral relationship was rooted in history and mutual respect, reflecting early diplomatic exchanges after Pakistan’s independence. Dar added that Pakistan hoped Myanmar’s forthcoming general elections would contribute to stability, development and inclusive governance.
