ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s opposition to unilateral sanctions and coercive measures against Iran, stressing that peaceful engagement was the most effective way to safeguard regional and global security. He made the remarks while addressing a ceremony in Islamabad marking the 47th anniversary of Iran’s National Day.

The President warned that any military escalation involving Iran could have far-reaching consequences, potentially destabilizing the Gulf region, South Asia, and Western Asia. He cautioned that attempts to resolve disputes through force carried grave risks, threatened global peace, and could inflict serious harm on the world economy.

In this context, Zardari welcomed diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions and encouraged continued dialogue among relevant parties, advocating a constructive approach to promote stability in the region.

Highlighting the shared responsibilities of neighboring countries, he said Pakistan and Iran remained committed to cooperation on border management, counter-terrorism, and transforming their common frontier into a zone of lawful trade, development, and collaborative engagement. He added that Pakistan valued balanced relations globally and was prepared to play a constructive role in promoting restraint, dialogue, and regional peace.

Observers noted that the event underscored Pakistan’s continued commitment to acting as a stabilizing influence in regional affairs, while also reflecting Tehran’s insistence on safeguarding its national security and sovereignty amid growing international tensions.
