KARACHI: Pakistan’s universities and government schools will now operate four days a week, a move announced under the ongoing national austerity campaign amid regional tensions in the Middle East.
The Higher Education Commission confirmed that universities will remain closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A formal notification issued from Islamabad also specified that government schools under the Federal Board will follow the same schedule, pausing physical classes on the three designated days.
According to the notification, the Federal Ministry of Education has communicated the revised timetable to all higher education institutions and government schools to ensure uniform implementation.
Officials indicated that while campuses will remain closed, universities and schools may conduct online classes on Fridays to maintain continuity of education. The decision aims to reduce operational costs while ensuring that students continue to receive instruction through virtual platforms.
Education analysts noted that the four-day schedule aligns with broader government measures to curb spending and optimize resources amid economic pressures, although some educators have raised concerns about potential impacts on learning outcomes and student engagement.
