ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has finalized a comprehensive roadmap for the revival of its long-struggling national steel producer, Pakistan Steel Mills, officials announced on Thursday. Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan said the plan aims to restore the mill as a viable and productive asset, reflecting the government’s broader vision of revitalizing key industrial sectors.
Speaking to Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia in Islamabad, Akhtar Khan highlighted that detailed discussions had been held on strengthening Pakistan-Russia cooperation, with a particular focus on the modernization and operational revival of the steel complex. He said the government was actively exploring partnerships with private and international investors to ensure the mill’s sustainable development.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision is to restore Pakistan Steel Mills as a productive national asset that contributes to industrial growth and employment,” Akhtar Khan said. He added that five companies had already expressed strong interest in investing in the project and participating in the mill’s revival.
The plan, he noted, combines technical modernization with financial restructuring to address years of underperformance and accumulated losses. Observers described the roadmap as a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its industrial base and reduce dependence on imported steel.
The government hopes that by attracting strategic partners, modernizing equipment, and enhancing operational efficiency, Pakistan Steel Mills can once again play a central role in the country’s manufacturing sector. The discussions with the Russian ambassador also reflected Pakistan’s broader interest in deepening bilateral ties, particularly in areas of industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and investment.
