NEW YORK: Pakistan called for the consistent and courageous application of international law, emphasizing the need to uphold the core principles of the United Nations Charter, during a major conference on international law in Singapore.
Speaking at the International Law Year in Review 2026, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted what he described as a growing disregard for established legal frameworks in global affairs.
In his address, Ahmad drew attention to India’s recent move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, describing it as an “illegal and unilateral” action that threatened longstanding agreements on shared water resources between the two countries. He underscored the importance of restraint in the use of force and stressed that states must adhere to international norms, warning that failure to do so risked further instability in already fragile regions.
Ahmad also urged the international community to ensure fuller implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, arguing that selective enforcement undermined the credibility of global institutions. He said that upholding international law required not only adherence to formal agreements but also a commitment to fairness, impartiality, and the protection of weaker states.
Observers noted that Pakistan’s address at the Singapore conference reflected growing frustration among smaller and medium-sized countries over what they perceive as inconsistent application of international law, particularly in disputes involving major powers. Ahmad’s remarks were seen as a call to reaffirm the rule-based international order and to prevent powerful states from acting with impunity.
