WASHINGTON: Pakistan and the United States on Saturday signaled a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties, with both sides emphasizing the importance of trade and investment as pillars of the relationship.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Washington DC between a Pakistani delegation, led by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, and US Commerce Secretary Howard A Lutnick at the Department of Commerce.
According to a statement shared on the ministry’s official X account, the discussions encompassed US interest in investing across a range of sectors, notably information and communication technology, mining, and energy. The talks were described as constructive, with both sides underlining their shared objective of deepening economic collaboration through practical, mutually beneficial initiatives.
During the meeting, the Pakistani finance minister acknowledged the role of the US Chamber of Commerce in organizing the forthcoming US-Pakistan Trade and Investment Forum, scheduled for 31 March 2026. The forum is expected to attract leading companies from both countries, alongside ministerial representation from Pakistan and the United States.
Senator Aurangzeb expressed hope that the office of the US commerce secretary would actively participate, signaling the importance both governments attach to the event. “Both sides reiterated their commitment to further their engagements on investments in major projects in the coming months,” the ministry noted in its statement, reflecting a shared intent to translate dialogue into tangible economic outcomes.
The developments came just two days after Pakistan and the US formally launched a strategic economic initiative aimed at expanding cooperation in infrastructure and service projects. A key component of the initiative includes collaboration with the US General Services Administration regarding the operation, maintenance, renovation, and eventual redevelopment of the historic Roosevelt Hotel in New York.
Observers noted that these exchanges reflect a broader trend in US-Pakistan relations, wherein both countries are seeking to leverage economic cooperation as a stabilizing force, complementing ongoing discussions on regional security, technology, and energy.
