ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Uzbekistan agreed to deepen their strategic economic partnership during the 10th Session of the Pakistan-Uzbekistan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation, held in Islamabad on Monday.

The session was co-chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade, Laziz Kudratov. The meeting provided an opportunity for a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and the establishment of a forward-looking roadmap aimed at strengthening cooperation across major economic and social sectors.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over the steady progress achieved since the previous session in 2025 and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade, investment, and broader economic engagement. Officials agreed to expedite institutional mechanisms to reach a bilateral trade target of $2 billion and established a Joint Working Group on labor relations.

The group will focus on labor mobility, skills development, workplace safety, and practical matters relating to employment visas, reflecting growing attention to human capital as a driver of economic collaboration. Transport and communications featured prominently in discussions, with both parties reviewing progress on regional railway projects, exploring alternative trade corridors, and expressing interest in launching direct air services to further improve connectivity.

Agriculture and food security were also highlighted, including the advancement of phytosanitary protocols to facilitate the export of Uzbek fruits to Pakistan. Scientific and educational cooperation was another focus, with agreements signed to promote joint research, faculty and student exchanges, vocational and technical training, and innovation-led capacity building.
