KARACHI: Pakistan’s successful mediation in a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran has triggered strong political and media reactions in India.
Analysts and opposition leaders criticised the Indian government, saying Pakistan’s diplomatic role had reshaped the regional narrative.
Indian commentators questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling earlier claims of isolating Pakistan globally and arguing that Islamabad had instead gained diplomatic prominence.
Critics also pointed to the growing international recognition of Pakistan’s leadership, highlighting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir.
The opposition Indian National Congress intensified its criticism, stating that Pakistan’s involvement in brokering a two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran had undermined India’s long-standing foreign policy stance.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Pakistan’s role challenged India’s efforts to diplomatically isolate Islamabad on terrorism-related issues and raised questions about the direction of New Delhi’s foreign policy.
He also demanded clarification over previous military actions and accused the Modi government of failing to adequately explain decisions related to regional conflicts.
Reports indicated that the ceasefire extension was announced by US President Donald Trump following Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, while Iran’s new leadership also endorsed the truce.
