ANKARA: The Palestinian presidency has squarely blamed the United States for Israel’s latest attack on a school in central Gaza, where displaced Palestinians had sought refuge. The spokesperson for the Palestinian Presidency, Nabih Abu Rudeineh, condemned the assault and stated that the US government bears responsibility for the “massacre” due to its unwavering financial, military, and political support for Israel. This statement, reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa, highlights growing tensions and criticism of the US’s role in the ongoing conflict.
The attack took place early Saturday when Israeli forces launched missiles at the Al-Taba’een school in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza. The school was being used as a shelter for displaced Palestinians amid the ongoing violence. According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, the missile strike resulted in the deaths of at least 100 Palestinians, many of whom were performing Fajr (dawn) prayers at the time of the attack. This tragic incident has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where thousands of civilians have already been killed or injured in the conflict.
Abu Rudeineh’s statement emphasized that this attack is part of a broader pattern of what he described as daily atrocities committed by Israeli forces in Gaza and the West Bank. He accused Israel of engaging in a systematic campaign to annihilate the Palestinian people through collective massacres and daily killings, while the international community remains largely silent. The Palestinian leadership argues that the US’s continued support for Israel, especially in the form of military aid, directly implicates it in the ongoing violence and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe.
This attack occurred shortly after the US announced a new military aid package to Israel, worth $3.5 billion. This aid is part of a broader, long-standing relationship in which the US has provided Israel with substantial military and financial support, amounting to nearly $146 billion since World War II. The timing of this announcement, coupled with the attack, has intensified criticism of the US’s role in the conflict. Critics argue that this support enables Israel to carry out military operations that result in significant civilian casualties, further fueling tensions in the region.
Abu Rudeineh called on the US to pressure Israel into halting its military operations and to adhere to international law. He urged an end to what he termed “blind support” that has led to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. Despite calls from various international mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the US itself, for a ceasefire and a resolution to the conflict, Israel has continued its offensive in Gaza.
