Premier directed GB administration to focus on the provision of essential services such as schools, playgrounds, and electricity in District Ghizer, which has been hit hardest by infrastructural deficits

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at enhancing the development and welfare of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) during a special meeting of the GB Cabinet in Gilgit on Wednesday. His visit to the region underscored the federal government’s strong commitment to addressing the pressing needs of the area and fostering progress in key sectors.

One of the most significant announcements was the immediate provision of 100 megawatts of electricity to GB, a vital intervention to improve the region’s power infrastructure and meet growing energy demands. The prime minister also revealed plans to establish a Rs1 billion endowment fund for the meritorious students of Baltistan and Karakoram universities, aiming to boost educational opportunities for the youth in the region.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the 2022 floods, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the timely and successful completion of housing for flood victims in Buber village, Ghizer district, praising the high quality of the reconstruction efforts. He directed the GB administration to focus on the provision of essential services such as schools, playgrounds, and electricity in District Ghizer, which has been hit hardest by infrastructural deficits.

A key part of his address focused on strengthening the education sector, with the introduction of Daanish Schools — a government initiative aimed at bringing quality education to remote areas. Recalling his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, PM Shehbaz reiterated his commitment to GB’s educational development, highlighting his previous contribution of Rs1 billion to the region’s education sector.

In addition to education, the prime minister outlined his vision for GB’s economic recovery, citing signs of progress in Pakistan’s national economy. He pointed to the historic rise in the stock market, increased remittances, and a higher number of tax filers as evidence of the country’s positive trajectory. He credited the successful collaboration between all provinces, Azad Kashmir, and GB for contributing to Pakistan’s economic recovery and called for sustained cooperation for continued national development.

PM Shehbaz also discussed plans for promoting tourism in GB, a region known for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. He revealed that Qatari investors had shown interest in the region’s tourism sector, which could significantly contribute to job creation and economic growth.
