ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the preparation of a comprehensive plan in coordination with provincial governments to ensure uninterrupted supply of petroleum products amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
During a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister, officials reviewed the current economic situation in light of global developments. Participants were briefed in detail on how recent international tensions could impact Pakistan’s economy, particularly in terms of energy supplies and petroleum product availability.
The prime minister instructed the concerned committee to prepare a strategy emphasizing austerity, conservation, and savings, and requested actionable proposals within 48 hours. He stressed that relief for the public should remain the top priority and that the financial burden on citizens must be minimized while protecting essential supplies.
As part of the strategy, Prime Minister Sharif directed the federal ministers for Finance and Petroleum to visit provincial capitals and coordinate with local governments to formulate a plan ensuring the steady supply of petroleum products. The plan is intended to safeguard citizens from artificial shortages and maintain access to fuel across the country.
He warned that any petrol pump or petroleum company found hoarding products or creating artificial scarcity would face immediate action, including closure and cancellation of licenses, along with legal proceedings against those responsible.
The meeting also noted that the committee formed to assess the economic effects of the recent international tensions continues to closely monitor the national situation. It was reported that due to these monitoring efforts, no genuine shortage of petroleum products has occurred in the country. The committee’s recommendations were also behind the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices, ensuring that the rise in global market rates was transferred to consumers with the minimum possible burden.
The prime minister’s directives are part of the government’s broader effort to shield the public from the adverse effects of global economic pressures while ensuring uninterrupted access to essential energy supplies.
