ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to arrive in New York tonight for a five-day visit primarily focused on attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He is accompanied by a delegation that includes Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, Federal Education and Professional Training Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, as stated in a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office.

During his time at the UNGA, Prime Minister Shehbaz will address several high-level meetings, including the “High-Level Meeting on the Existential Threat Posed by Sea-level Rise,” the “SDG Moment 2024,” and the UN Security Council’s Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace.” Additionally, he plans to engage with members of the US-Pakistan Business Council and Pakistani bankers to discuss his government’s pro-business and investment policies.

Significant meetings are also on his agenda, including discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Founder Bill Gates, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

A notable meeting with Palestinian President Mehmood Abbas will focus on strategies to encourage the international community to expedite efforts to end Israel’s oppression of Palestine. Prime Minister Shehbaz will also attend a luncheon hosted by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam to celebrate 40 years of Brunei’s UN membership and a dinner reception by Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Dr. Muhammad Yunus, marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s UN membership.
