ISLAMABAD: In a comprehensive review meeting held on Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif provided detailed instructions and directives aimed at overhauling Pakistan’s aviation sector. The session centered on enhancing airport infrastructure and services, ensuring that facilities meet the growing demands of passengers, tourists, and overseas Pakistanis.
Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the need for better passenger experience by directing that additional service counters be made operational during peak hours. This measure is intended to alleviate long wait times and improve overall efficiency at airports. The Prime Minister’s focus on passenger convenience reflects a broader aim to enhance the quality of service across the aviation sector. He stressed the urgent need to complete the annual safety audit of the aviation sector. This audit is crucial for maintaining high safety standards and ensuring that all aviation operations adhere to rigorous safety protocols.
The Prime Minister said the completion of this audit would help bolster confidence in Pakistan’s aviation safety measures. The Aviation Act 2023, which was passed during the previous administration, was highlighted as the cornerstone of current aviation reforms. PM Sharif instructed that all policy measures and reforms outlined in the Act be fully implemented. This legislation serves as a framework for modernizing the aviation sector, and its thorough execution is expected to drive significant improvements in the industry. A major focus of the meeting was the development of Skardu International Airport.
PM Sharif underscored the importance of providing top-notch facilities at this airport to enhance passenger experience. The government plans to initiate work on a feasibility report for expanding Skardu Airport, aiming to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and improve overall infrastructure. The feasibility report for the expansion of Skardu Airport will explore various aspects of the project, including the potential for infrastructure upgrades, increased capacity, and improved services. The report will be a critical step in planning the expansion and ensuring that the project meets the needs of both local and international travelers.
The meeting also discussed the installation of automated border control systems at airports. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize airport operations and enhance security. Automated systems are expected to streamline passenger processing, reduce wait times, and improve overall efficiency. To ensure transparency and effectiveness, third-party validation of all projects and initiatives related to aviation sector reforms is being conducted. This approach aims to provide an independent assessment of progress and implementation, helping to maintain high standards and accountability.
