ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif led a pivotal meeting on Sunday to evaluate the legal aspects and finalize the procedures for the dissolution of the Public Works Department (PWD). This session marked a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline public administration and enhance transparency in public sector operations.
During the meeting, the prime minister was unequivocal in his directives concerning the financial compensation for employees affected by the closure of the PWD. He stressed that those who have been found guilty of serious corruption charges will not be eligible for any financial package, reiterating his administration’s firm stance on accountability and zero tolerance for corruption. This move is in line with the government’s broader agenda to cleanse public institutions of corrupt practices and ensure that public funds are utilized effectively and ethically.
PM Shehbaz Sharif also called for an expedited and comprehensive plan to transfer the ongoing PWD projects to the provincial governments and other relevant departments. This transfer is designed to ensure continuity in public infrastructure projects, minimizing any potential disruptions that could arise from the department’s dissolution. The prime minister’s directive reflects a commitment to maintaining momentum in development projects while ensuring that they are managed efficiently at the provincial level.
Furthermore, the prime minister emphasized the importance of presenting all final recommendations concerning the PWD’s closure to the cabinet for approval. This step is crucial to ensure that the decision is thoroughly deliberated and aligns with the broader objectives of the government’s administrative reforms.
In a gesture aimed at recognizing and supporting the efforts of diligent employees, PM Shehbaz Sharif approved the implementation of an age relaxation proposal. This policy would facilitate the re-employment of hardworking and honest individuals with shorter tenures in the PWD, offering them an opportunity to continue their public service. This initiative is seen as a way to retain valuable human resources within the public sector while ensuring that those who have served with integrity are not unfairly disadvantaged by the department’s closure.
The meeting was attended by several key government officials, including Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Economic Affairs Division Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, and Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Hussain Pirzada. Their presence underscored the high level of importance the government places on managing the dissolution of the PWD with fairness, efficiency, and a strong commitment to upholding integrity within public institutions.
