Premier says 5G technology would be crucial in achieving the govt’s ‘Digital Pakistan’ vision

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, setting an ambitious target of reaching $25 billion in IT exports within the next three years. During a meeting with a five-member delegation from VEON Group, led by Chairman Augie K Fabela, the Prime Minister highlighted key government initiatives, including the launch of 5G services, aimed at providing high-speed, reliable internet access across the country, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
The Prime Minister underscored that the rollout of 5G technology would be pivotal in realizing the “Digital Pakistan” vision, which aims to improve connectivity and expand digital infrastructure throughout the nation. He pointed out that the telecommunications sector plays a critical role in transitioning towards a cashless, digital economy, noting that it could drive greater financial inclusion and economic growth.
In his remarks, PM Shehbaz acknowledged the significant contributions of VEON Group’s subsidiary, Jazz, to Pakistan’s telecommunications and financial technology sectors. He expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with VEON Group on initiatives in IT, digitisation, and artificial intelligence, furthering the development of these crucial fields.
Members of the VEON delegation expressed their appreciation for the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, noting that Pakistan has emerged as an increasingly important investment destination for the IT and telecom industries. They commended the government’s progressive policies and the growing opportunities within the sector, signaling their readiness to deepen collaboration in the coming years.
This meeting reflects the ongoing drive by the Pakistani government to promote technological advancements and strengthen its position as a key player in the global IT and telecommunications markets.
