ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is set to engage the global community during the high-level segment of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 23 to 27, 2024, in New York. His address, scheduled for September 27, promises to reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism while accentuating the vital role of the United Nations in fostering global peace, security, and prosperity.
In a world increasingly marred by division and conflict, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to underscore the urgent necessity of addressing long-standing issues that remain unresolved on the UN Security Council’s agenda. Central to his discourse will be the enduring humanitarian crises in Palestine and Jammu & Kashmir, which he will frame as matters requiring immediate international attention and action. By spotlighting these pressing issues, he aims to galvanize the global community to act with both urgency and moral clarity.
Moreover, the Prime Minister will articulate a vision for reforming international economic relations, drawing attention to the inequities that persist within the global financial system. He will advocate for a more equitable financial architecture that serves the interests of developing nations, ensuring their voices are heard in decisions impacting their futures.
In tandem with these geopolitical challenges, Prime Minister Sharif will confront the existential threat posed by climate change, urging the international community to adopt decisive measures. He is expected to highlight the rising tide of Islamophobia as a significant barrier to global harmony, calling for collective efforts to combat discrimination and promote understanding among diverse cultures.
During the UNGA session, the Prime Minister will participate in several high-level meetings, including a “High-Level Meeting on the Existential Threat Posed by Sea-Level Rise” and an Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace” within the UN Security Council. These discussions will provide critical platforms for Pakistan to advocate for proactive measures in sustainable development and climate resilience.
Additionally, Prime Minister Sharif is slated to conduct bilateral meetings with prominent world leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly. These interactions aim not only to strengthen diplomatic ties but also to position Pakistan as a key player in the global dialogue on pressing issues.
The UN General Assembly’s High-Level segment represents a pivotal opportunity for Pakistan to articulate its perspectives on regional and international matters of significant importance. Prime Minister Sharif will emphasize placing people at the heart of both domestic and global development agendas, championing policies that prioritize human welfare and dignity in an increasingly interconnected world.
