PM warns Israeli attack threatens regional peace

The Foreign Office mirrored these sentiments in an official statement, denouncing the strikes as a “dangerous escalation” and a “grave violation” of the United Nations Charter

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has unequivocally condemned Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Foreign Office (FO) expressing grave concerns about the potential ramifications for regional peace and the principles of international law. The Israeli strikes, targeting military installations in Iran, represent a significant escalation in tensions that have been mounting in the region.

This military action follows Iran’s alleged attacks, notably a large-scale ballistic missile assault on Israel earlier this month, which reportedly involved the launch of around 200 missiles—marking Iran’s second direct strike on Israel in a mere six months. In a forceful response, Prime Minister Shehbaz took to social media to convey Pakistan’s disapproval of Israel’s actions, stating, “Pakistan stands with Tehran and its other neighbours in pursuit of peace.” He underscored the dangerous implications of Israeli aggression, warning that it threatens the fragile stability of a region already fraught with volatility.

The Foreign Office mirrored these sentiments in an official statement, denouncing the strikes as a “dangerous escalation” and a “grave violation” of the United Nations Charter. The statement emphasized that such military actions undermine the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, further complicating efforts to establish lasting peace in the region. Moreover, the Foreign Office urged the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to prevent further conflict. “We call on the UN Security Council to play its role in maintaining international peace and take immediate steps to halt Israeli recklessness in the region,” the press release asserted.

This plea reflects a growing concern among nations about escalating hostilities and the pressing need for a robust international response to maintain stability. In a similar vein, Saudi Arabia has condemned Israel’s strikes, with its Foreign Ministry issuing a statement reinforcing the Kingdom’s firm stance against any escalation of conflict. Riyadh cautioned that such aggressive actions threaten the security and stability of Middle Eastern nations, highlighting the precarious nature of peace in a region often defined by its tumultuous history.

Meanwhile, the United States has also entered the fray, urging Iran to cease its attacks on Israel to avert further violence. Sean Savett, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, remarked, “We urge Iran to cease its attacks on Israel so that this cycle of fighting can end without further escalation.” This call for restraint underscores widespread apprehension regarding the potential for a larger conflict, as the region remains tense with fears of continued hostilities.
