Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar pointed out that during the PML-N’s tenure, Pakistan was on track to join the G20, reflecting its rapid economic development

LAHORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to economic reforms, stating that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is working tirelessly to restore the country’s economy. Speaking to the media during the urs celebrations of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh on Sunday, Dar expressed optimism about Pakistan’s economic future under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Dar acknowledged the challenges that Pakistan has faced economically in recent years, noting that obstacles were often created just as the economy was beginning to recover. He prayed that this time, with divine help, Pakistan would become an economically prestigious country on the global stage. He was joined by Provincial Food Minister Bilal Yasin and other officials at the event. Reflecting on his previous tenure as finance minister, Dar highlighted the progress made under the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government from 2013 to 2018.

Ishaq Dar recalled that when the PML-N took office in 2013, the country was plagued by up to 18 hours of load-shedding and frequent terrorist incidents, which severely impacted the economy. However, within three-and-a-half years, the government was able to address these issues, significantly reducing load-shedding and improving security conditions, earning praise from international forums. Dar pointed out that during the PML-N’s tenure, Pakistan was on track to join the G20, reflecting its rapid economic development.

However, the following four years saw a decline, with Pakistan’s economic ranking falling to the 47th position globally. He attributed the current economic difficulties to the policies implemented during that period. Despite these setbacks, Dar expressed confidence in the current government’s efforts to stabilize the economy. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, all-out efforts are being made to restore economic stability and provide relief to the people of Pakistan.

As part of these efforts, the provincial government in Punjab has introduced a relief of Rs. 14 per unit in electricity bills, and the prime minister has allocated a Rs. 50 billion subsidy for electricity users consuming up to 200 units, with cabinet approval. Dar’s remarks underscore the government’s focus on economic recovery and its determination to navigate the country through the current challenges, aiming to restore Pakistan’s position on the global economic stage.
