KARACHI: A police officer in Karachi has been suspended following the viral circulation of a TikTok video showing him in uniform with a woman, in clear violation of departmental guidelines. The video, which quickly gained traction on social media, depicts the woman smoking a cigarette while the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) remains seated in his police uniform. The scene sparked public outrage and raised questions about the professionalism and conduct of law enforcement personnel.
Kamran Khan, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the Korangi area, acted swiftly in response to the video, confirming the suspension of the officer and the initiation of an internal inquiry. Khan confirmed that the officer in question was ASI Safdar, who serves as the station house officer in the Korangi precinct. Upon identifying the officer, Khan immediately removed him from his position and set in motion an internal investigation to assess the full scope of the incident.
This development highlights ongoing concerns within the Sindh Police regarding the conduct of officers on duty. Despite repeated instructions from the Sindh Inspector General of Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, who has expressly prohibited officers from making videos in uniform during working hours, the trend persists. The authorities have struggled to curb the practice, with officers continuing to post videos on social media, leading to periodic scandals that undermine the police force’s image.
A spokesperson for the Sindh Police reiterated the seriousness of the issue, acknowledging that despite clear directives, such incidents continue to occur. The spokesperson emphasized that the police leadership is actively working to address this behavior, but the case of ASI Safdar serves as another reminder of the challenges in enforcing discipline and maintaining professional standards within the force.
