ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday said some neighboring countries have become complicit in terrorist activities, providing direct financing and technical support to groups operating against Pakistan.
President Zardari made the remarks while thanking global leaders for expressing solidarity after a deadly terrorist attack in Islamabad. The incident left at least 33 people dead and dozens injured, according to a statement from the President Secretariat’s media wing. He reiterated that terrorism cannot be confronted by any single country alone.
The attack occurred on February 6 during Friday prayers, when a suicide bomber opened fire and detonated himself at the entrance of the Imambargah and Mosque Khadijat-ul-Kubra in the Tarlai area of Islamabad. Condemnations poured in from across the world. Later, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said authorities had arrested the mastermind of the attack, linked to the outlawed Daesh group, along with several facilitators.
President Zardari said Pakistan’s experience shows that when terrorist groups are given space, facilitation or impunity beyond national borders, the consequences are borne by innocent civilians worldwide. He added that “certain neighboring countries” had become partners in crime by allowing terror groups to operate against Pakistan. Others, he said, provided direct financial, technical, and military support.
President Zardari thanked world leaders and nations for standing with Pakistan in its grief. “Pakistan is humbled by the strong and sincere outpouring of support and solidarity from world leaders, governments, and international organizations,” he said.
