JAMSHORO: Hundreds of workers from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and local residents staged a protest rally in Jamshoro on Sunday against the opening of a liquor outlet near major universities. Demonstrators marched through the city before holding a sit-in outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Protesters said the establishment of a liquor outlet close to four universities could distract students from their studies and undermine the academic environment. They noted that thousands of students from across the country attend Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, and Sindh University, and described the placement of the outlet between these institutions as “illegal and unconstitutional.”
Participants also raised concerns that the outlet, located along the Indus Highway, could contribute to road accidents. They demanded the immediate cancellation of the licence granted for the facility.
The demonstration continued for several hours, with protesters chanting slogans and warning that they would intensify their movement if authorities failed to act.
