KARACHI: Protesters affiliated with a religious organisation forced their way into the United States consulate in Karachi on Sunday following unverified reports circulating on social media of a joint US-Israel strike that allegedly killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as demonstrators breached the compound’s outer perimeter, overturning security barricades and attempting to damage property. Some protesters were seen trying to set fire to sections of the premises before law enforcement personnel intervened.
According to preliminary information, six people were reported dead and several others injured during the unrest. Officials have not yet confirmed the precise circumstances of the casualties.
Despite the heavy security presence, protesters managed to raise the Iranian flag within the vicinity of the consulate before being dispersed.
