The PTA’s collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, as well as social media companies, aims to strengthen efforts to combat harmful content online

ISLAMABAD: In an effort to create a safer digital environment, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting responsible internet use and curbing the spread of harmful content on social media platforms. This move comes as part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and security of online spaces and raise public awareness about the dangers of disseminating unlawful material.
The PTA has called upon citizens to act responsibly when using the internet, urging users to avoid sharing or uploading content that could undermine national defense, integrity, or security. The authority highlighted that such actions are not only unethical but also illegal, with strict penalties under the law for violators. The PTA’s guidelines emphasize the importance of understanding the legal framework surrounding online behavior, reminding users that the dissemination of harmful content is punishable under Pakistan’s legal system.
One of the key aspects of the campaign is the encouragement of public vigilance. The PTA has advised citizens to report any online content that they believe to be harmful or against the state to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). In addition to reporting such material to the FIA, users are also encouraged to flag the content with social media platforms and the PTA itself to ensure its swift removal. The PTA’s collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, as well as social media companies, aims to strengthen efforts to combat harmful content online.
The campaign also highlights the provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which criminalizes the spread of hateful material through information systems or digital devices. Specifically, the law targets content that promotes inter-religious, communal, or racial hatred, deeming it a criminal offense punishable under Pakistan’s legal framework. The PTA hopes that by educating the public on these legal implications, the campaign will help foster a more responsible and secure online culture.
In tandem with the campaign, the PTA recently addressed issues related to the slowdown in internet services across Pakistan. According to the PTA, disruptions were primarily caused by damage to international submarine cables that connect Pakistan to global internet networks. Of the seven submarine cables serving Pakistan, two suffered significant damage, leading to reduced internet speeds nationwide.
