PESHAWAR: The special assistant to the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for information and public relations, Shafi Jan, said the undisclosed transfer of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan to a hospital, without formally informing his family, legal counsel or party leadership, was deeply troubling and raised serious questions about transparency and humane governance.

In a statement issued in Peshawar, Shafi Jan said chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi had personally visited Adiala Jail to inquire about the health and wellbeing of Imran Khan. He said the refusal to allow the meeting amounted to a clear disregard for constitutional provisions and established legal procedures by the federal and Punjab governments.

He said the chief minister, along with members of the provincial assembly, staged a peaceful overnight sit-in outside Adiala Jail to highlight the issue. He added that their sole demand was that Imran Khan be given immediate access to his personal doctors so that an independent and transparent medical assessment could be carried out.

Shafi Jan expressed concern that even Imran Khan’s family had not been kept informed about his health, which he said was inconsistent with fundamental human rights, ethical standards and democratic values. He said such actions created the impression that critical information about Imran Khan’s condition was being deliberately withheld.

He said continued restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan pointed to what he described as a worrying pattern of political victimisation and enforced isolation.

Shafi Jan said that earlier in the day the chief minister and other representatives had approached the supreme court to seek constitutional protection for Imran Khan’s health and fundamental rights. He said it was regrettable that the federal government continued to show inflexibility and insensitivity on an issue of such seriousness.

He added that PTI workers and supporters in Pakistan and abroad remained deeply concerned about Imran Khan’s health, while the federal and Punjab governments appeared unwilling to fulfil their constitutional duties and moral responsibility.

He said transferring Imran Khan to a hospital without transparency, restricting access and withholding medical details had fuelled public anxiety and created an atmosphere of fear and mistrust rather than confidence and accountability.

Questioning the lack of disclosure, Shafi Jan asked why details were not being shared openly with the family and the public if Imran Khan’s health was stable. He demanded immediate and unhindered access for family members, the legal team, party leadership and personal physicians, and called for an end to what he described as a prolonged and unjust campaign of political victimisation.

He warned that any further negligence regarding Imran Khan’s health would be unacceptable and said full responsibility for any adverse consequences would rest with the federal and Punjab governments.
