QUETTA: In a tragic incident, a blast at Quetta’s railway station claimed the lives of at least 27 individuals, leaving over 40 others injured. The explosion occurred near the station’s ticket office moments before the scheduled departure of the Jaffer Express to Peshawar. Security forces are investigating the nature of the blast, with initial reports indicating a likely suicide attack.

SSP Operations Mohammad Baloch confirmed the fatalities and injuries, noting that emergency services swiftly transported the casualties to Quetta’s Civil Hospital. Dr. Noorullah, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, declared an emergency, mobilizing additional doctors and medical staff to aid the injured. According to Dr. Aisha Faiz, medical assistance is actively underway for those affected by the blast.

Commissioner Quetta Mohammad Hamza Shafqat revealed that a banned militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The suicide bomber reportedly bypassed security by entering through an open entrance rather than the walkthrough gate. Shafqat urged the public to donate blood for the injured and cautioned that terrorists often target high-traffic areas to maximize impact.

A banned militant organization has claimed responsibility for the recent attack, intensifying concerns over public security in an already volatile region. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities within Balochistan’s security framework. The assault on a major transportation hub underscores the militants’ ability to exploit soft targets, reigniting calls for more robust countermeasures to safeguard public spaces and protect civilians.

In response to the tragedy, both federal and provincial authorities are now under pressure to reevaluate and strengthen security protocols across key transit locations and public areas throughout the region. The provincial government, alongside federal security agencies, has been called upon to bolster intelligence-gathering efforts and increase the presence of law enforcement in high-risk zones. Authorities are considering the implementation of advanced surveillance systems, stricter entry checks, and enhanced coordination between local and federal security units to prevent such attacks from recurring.

The interim president, Yousaf Raza Gillani, condemned the attack, calling terrorists “enemies of humanity” who deliberately target civilians. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences for the victims and directed the Balochistan government to prioritize medical treatment for the wounded. He reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, stressing that those behind such attacks would face justice.

Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has also ordered a full investigation, vowing to continue efforts to dismantle terrorist networks across the province. Bugti highlighted the progress made in apprehending suspects involved in previous incidents, affirming that Balochistan remains steadfast in its fight against extremism.

Sindh’s Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, joined in condemning the blast, lamenting the tragic loss of life and underscoring that anti-state actors are determined to instill fear among the public. This incident has underscored the need for increased vigilance and enhanced security measures as both federal and provincial governments work to address and prevent further acts of terrorism.
