RAWALPINDI: The Inspector General of Railways Police has ramped up efforts to address corruption and negligence within the department, resulting in the dismissal of two officers and the suspension of another pending an inquiry. Faiz Rasool, an Office Superintendent from the Karachi Division, and Adeel Maeen, a Head Clerk from the Sukkur Division, were both terminated for serious neglect of their responsibilities, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Railways Police.
In addition, Fazal Mahmood, the Private Secretary to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South, has been suspended due to ongoing corruption allegations. The IG Railways Police has emphasized a commitment to enhance the efficiency of the force while eradicating corrupt practices. This initiative is part of a broader accountability strategy that has seen multiple employees dismissed for similar offenses, along with several transfers enacted in response to poor performance and numerous complaints lodged against various officers.
In a related development, Pakistan has decided to pursue separate agreements with China for the Mainline One (ML-1) project, a significant component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which aims to upgrade Pakistan’s railway network. Sources indicate that the decision was made to avoid signing the entire $6.8 billion ML-1 agreement at once, opting instead for phased agreements for the project’s two main components.
The first agreement for Phase-I, valued at approximately $3.2 billion, is expected to be finalized next month. Phase-I will focus on upgrading the railway line from Karachi to Hyderabad and from Hyderabad to Multan. Following the completion of this phase, a feasibility study will be conducted for Phase-II, which involves constructing the railway line from Multan to Peshawar.
