LAHORE: Rauf Hasan, Central Information Secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has emphasized the urgent need for dialogue between the military and his party to prevent further escalation of political and economic instability. In his first interview since his release from custody last month, Hasan stressed that negotiations should commence immediately to address violent incidents, foster political understanding, and stabilize the economy.

Hasan reiterated PTI’s openness to discussions with the military, asserting that the party has always been willing to engage in dialogue. He urged that talks begin without delay, citing national interest as a key reason for the engagement. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has similarly expressed his willingness to negotiate with the military on multiple occasions. However, military spokespersons have previously dismissed the prospect of talks with PTI, labeling it as a ‘disruptive group’ and asserting that dialogue is the purview of political parties, not the military.

During the interview, Hasan highlighted the public’s continued support for Imran Khan, whose mandate he believes has been undermined. He argued that recognizing this mandate is essential, whether through judicial processes or new elections, and stressed the rising violence across the country as evidence of the need for political reconciliation.

Hasan also pointed to unmet economic expectations and concerns from international allies like Saudi Arabia, China, and the UAE about further financial support. He suggested that political instability is a primary factor affecting economic confidence, which could only be remedied by acknowledging PTI’s mandate.

In addressing the May 9 incidents, Hasan reiterated PTI’s position that a judicial commission should investigate the events or provide evidence warranting an apology. He mentioned that some PTI leaders maintain personal contacts with military officials, which could facilitate formal dialogue. Hasan revealed that Imran Khan has established a three-member committee to handle negotiations with the military, although he did not elaborate on the specifics of these contacts.

Regarding the government’s alleged attempts to influence the judiciary, Hasan expressed doubts about their success, emphasizing the importance of judicial independence for state stability. He criticized the government’s legislative efforts to control the judiciary, asserting that autonomy is crucial.

PTI plans to mobilize public support through a nationwide movement starting September 8, with rallies and gatherings scheduled in major cities. Hasan confirmed that the Islamabad rally will proceed as planned, despite any administrative permissions. He also indicated that additional parties may join the opposition alliance and noted recent agreements with Maulana Fazlur Rehman to form committees in Parliament to develop a unified strategy.

Hasan described recent interactions with Rehman and other political figures as positive and expressed confidence in advancing the opposition’s agenda through cooperative efforts.
