Pakistan’s mining sector surges as SIFC-led global partnerships deliver landmark economic gains, signaling a transformative moment for national growth and investment

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has described the Reko Diq project as a landmark achievement in its minerals sector, presenting it as a symbol of growing international confidence and a key pillar of the country’s long-term economic prospects.
Officials said facilitation by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and its broader vision were helping to promote global partnerships in Pakistan’s mining industry, calling recent developments a major success for the national economy.
The remarks followed a meeting between the federal minister for petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Canada’s high commissioner, Tarek Ali Khan, during which both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in minerals, energy, investment and technical expertise.
The Canadian high commissioner said the success of Barrick Gold’s Reko Diq project had laid a strong foundation for deeper Pakistan–Canada collaboration in the mining sector. He reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to encouraging the participation of its companies in Pakistan’s minerals industry and to taking part in the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum.
Canada has also invited Pakistan to participate in the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2026 conference, one of the world’s largest mining events. Officials said the forum would provide an important platform to showcase Pakistan’s mineral potential to global investors and expand bilateral cooperation.
Officials described Reko Diq as not only one of Pakistan’s most significant investment projects but also a marker of renewed international trust. They said the development of mineral resources would support economic self-reliance, industrial expansion and long-term stability.
Dr Hamid Ashraf, the petroleum minister’s adviser on geological survey policy, said Pakistan was working with the Geological Survey of Canada to produce maps that meet international standards. He said all testing related to mineral development would be conducted within Pakistan, saving time and increasing domestic revenue. Officials said progress in the mining sector, supported by SIFC facilitation, reflected broader efforts to revive and grow the national economy.
