WAZIRISITAN: Unidentified assailants launched a rocket attack on a vehicle in Wana, South Waziristan, killing three individuals, including a Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officer. The attack occurred near Baghicha Stop when a “fielder” vehicle was struck by a rocket, followed by a barrage of gunfire, according to police sources. The assault was swift and violent, resulting in the deaths of the CTD officer and two civilians. The bodies were transferred to Wana Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. The region, which has long been a hotspot for insurgent activity, has seen a series of such assaults, although the perpetrators remain unidentified. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the military’s media wing reported a significant success in the fight against terrorism. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that security forces, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Sarwakai area of South Waziristan, killed four terrorists affiliated with Khawarij, an extremist group.
The operation targeted a reported hideout of the Khawarij, and the military described the engagement as effective in eliminating the terrorists. In a separate development, a polio vaccination campaign in North Waziristan was abruptly suspended on October 29 following an armed attack on the team’s security detail. Fifteen armed men seized weapons from three police officers who had been assigned to protect the vaccination team in the Shiwa area.
Local police confirmed that the attack took place while the officers were stationed to secure the vaccination workers. The assault raised further concerns about the safety of polio workers in the region, which has been plagued by insecurity. Further violence occurred in Upper Orakzai, where gunmen attacked another polio vaccination team.
