Comments came as EU claims it has “credible information” regarding Iran’s missile shipments to Russia

MOSCOW: In the face of increasing reports regarding Iranian involvement in the Ukraine conflict, Russia has reiterated its position on Iran as a key ally, though it has been cautious in addressing the specific allegations. The European Union has raised alarms, citing “credible information” that Iran may have supplied short-range ballistic missiles to Russian forces engaged in the conflict in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov underscored the significance of the Russia-Iran partnership, stating, “Iran is our important partner.” He emphasized the ongoing trade and economic collaboration between the two nations but did not delve into the details of the missile transfer claims. This diplomatic positioning comes amidst heightened scrutiny and international concern regarding the potential implications of such arms transfers.

The Wall Street Journal first reported last Friday on Iran’s alleged missile supply to Russia. This claim has been supported by the European Union, which has suggested that new sanctions against Tehran could be imminent if the reports are verified. In response, Iran has categorically denied these allegations. Brigadier Fazlollah Nozari, a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, dismissed the claims as “psychological warfare” and reiterated Iran’s stance of neutrality in the Ukraine conflict.

Despite Iran’s denials, the allegations have sparked significant international unease. Both the United States and NATO have expressed concerns over the potential impact of such arms transfers on Ukraine’s defense and broader regional stability. Kyiv has warned that a strengthened military relationship between Iran and Russia could pose a threat not only to Ukraine but also to European and Middle Eastern stability.

As the situation unfolds, the White House has yet to provide official confirmation regarding the missile shipments, leaving the issue under careful scrutiny as international responses continue to evolve. The potential for new sanctions and heightened diplomatic tensions underscores the gravity of the situation and the implications for global geopolitics.
