MOSCOW/TEHRAN: Russia, Iran, Colombia, and Cuba have strongly condemned the recent US military operation in Venezuela. Russia reaffirmed its support for Caracas’s leadership in defending national interests and sovereignty, expressing serious concern over the US attacks.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called for Latin America to remain a “zone of peace” and urged dialogue to resolve the crisis and prevent further escalation. Iran described the US strikes as a violation of Venezuela’s national sovereignty and regional integrity, calling on the UN Security Council to take immediate action and hold those responsible accountable.

The attack, carried out by US warplanes and special forces, resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in the capital, Caracas. US President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, stating that both were taken out of Venezuela. Venezuelan authorities strongly condemned the strikes, accusing the US of targeting civilian areas in what they described as an open act of aggression aimed at seizing the country’s oil and mineral resources.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi detailed criminal charges against Maduro and his wife in New York, alleging conspiracy to acquire weapons for use against the United States, as well as involvement in drug trafficking and terrorism. Both have been formally indicted in the Southern District of New York and are expected to face trial. Bondi noted that on 7 August 2025, a $50 million reward had been offered for Maduro’s capture.
