MOSCOW: Russia said it was prepared to expand counter-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan after strongly condemning a deadly suicide attack in Islamabad that left dozens dead and scores injured.
In a statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry, its spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, described the bombing of a mosque in the capital on 6 February as a “barbaric act” and evidence of what she called the inhumane nature of terrorism. The attack, carried out during Friday prayers, killed at least 32 people and wounded around 170 others, according to official accounts.
Zakharova said the assault, which targeted worshippers gathered in a crowded place of prayer, underscored the persistent threat posed by militant violence. She stressed that Moscow had consistently called for the consolidation of efforts by the international community to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
“Russia strongly condemns this act,” she said, adding that her country stood ready to deepen cooperation with Islamabad on the anti-terrorism front. She characterized terrorism as a “common threat” requiring coordinated global action rather than isolated national responses. The statement also conveyed condolences from the Russian leadership.
President Vladimir Putin sent telegrams to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing sympathy with the families of those killed and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. The remarks signaled Moscow’s intention to reinforce security ties with Islamabad at a time when Pakistan has faced a renewed surge in militant attacks.
