MOSCOW: In a dramatic turn of events on Friday, Russia’s National Guard swiftly neutralized four inmates who had taken hostages at a penal colony in the Volgograd region. The inmates, who had fatally stabbed four prison staff members, declared themselves as Da’ish militants and posted videos online, showcasing their brutal actions. The incident has raised significant security concerns, especially given the inmates’ ability to orchestrate such an attack within a high-security facility.
The Russian National Guard, known for its elite capabilities, executed the operation with precision. “Snipers of the special forces of the Russian National Guard in the Volgograd region, with four precise shots, neutralized four prisoners who had taken prison employees hostage. The hostages have been released,” the state news agency RIA reported, quoting the National Guard’s official statement. The federal prisons service confirmed the successful operation, stating that all four attackers had been “liquidated.”
Tragically, the incident resulted in the deaths of four prison staff members who succumbed to stab wounds inflicted by the attackers. Additional staff members were taken to the hospital for treatment, though their conditions have not been fully disclosed. The attackers had initially taken a total of eight prison employees and four convicts hostage, creating a tense and dangerous situation that demanded immediate intervention.
In the videos posted by the attackers, a gruesome scene unfolded, with victims seen lying in pools of blood, one of whom had his throat slashed. The attackers, referring to themselves as “mujahideen” of Da’ish, were seen pacing in the prison yard, with one hostage visibly injured and slumped in a sitting position. The brutal nature of the attack, combined with the public dissemination of these videos, highlights the level of coordination and the extreme ideology driving the attackers.
The operation to free the hostages and eliminate the threat occurred shortly after President Vladimir Putin addressed the situation during a weekly Security Council meeting. Putin had called for reports from the interior minister, the FSB security chief, and the head of the National Guard, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the urgency with which the Russian government responded.
This incident is the latest in a series of militant attacks that have plagued Russia in recent months, particularly in regions with significant Muslim populations. In June, a Da’ish-linked prison uprising in Rostov ended with the deaths of six inmates who had taken hostages. Later that month, coordinated shooting attacks in Dagestan targeted a church, a synagogue, and a police checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people.
