KARACHI: Sindh’s Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani hoisted the flag at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry during ceremony in connection with August 14 celebrations. Speaking at the event, Ghani acknowledged the issues arising from recent rains, emphasizing that despite these challenges, public difficulties have been relatively manageable.
He highlighted that this year’s August 14 celebrations are extensive, and nationwide activity has commenced. Ghani stressed the importance of accountability, stating that any actions by individuals or military officers causing harm to institutions or attempting to do so should be addressed firmly. He reaffirmed that the government should act against any such individuals to ensure institutional integrity.
Regarding the recent rains, Ghani noted that while some damage to roads has occurred, immediate repairs might be futile due to ongoing rainfall. He assured that action would be taken against contractors responsible for damage to newly constructed roads. Efforts are underway to address drainage issues to minimize transportation problems.
Ghani also discussed the Karachi Water Supply Project, K-IV, originally budgeted at 25 billion rupees, of which 12.5 billion were to be provided by the Sindh government. He noted that the project’s cost had escalated during Imran Khan’s government, delaying progress. However, with the new administration, work has resumed, and all three components of the project are being tackled simultaneously. This project is now being carried out in collaboration with the World Bank.
Additionally, Ghani mentioned that the Hub Canal project, which aims to provide 100 million gallons of water to Karachi, is progressing and is expected to help alleviate the city’s water crisis. He stated that the completion of this project, along with the supply from another canal, will significantly address water shortages in the city.
BM Group’s head, Zubair Motiwala, also spoke, emphasizing the commitment to the nation and Sindh’s development. He expressed a desire for regular interaction between the Chamber of Commerce and government officials, suggesting the establishment of a municipal desk at the chamber to address civic issues more effectively. Following the addresses, Saeed Ghani and chamber officials hoisted the national flag and offered prayers for Pakistan’s stability and development.
