KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government, Saeed Ghani, has outlined a comprehensive strategy for road repairs in Karachi following the prolonged monsoon rains. Ghani, addressing concerns raised in the Sindh Assembly, detailed that the repair work will be conducted in phases once the weather permits. In his statement, Ghani acknowledged that the extended monsoon season has disrupted planned maintenance work. He emphasized that the initial phase of the repair plan will focus on major roads, with subsequent phases addressing smaller streets and alleys.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which had previously executed patchwork on 400 roads under the CLICK program, is currently investigating issues arising on 14 to 15 of these roads due to recent rains. Responding to opposition member Muhammad Shabbir’s concerns about road damage in his constituency, Ghani pointed out that the problem is widespread across the province, not confined to a single area or Karachi. He attributed the damage to the unusually heavy rainfall, which has led to substantial flooding and erosion.
Ghani also addressed claims made by opposition member Muhammad Aamir Siddiqui regarding the recorded rainfall. Contrary to Siddiqui’s assertion that only 20 to 30 mm of rain was recorded, Ghani reported that many areas experienced between 200 to 250 mm of rainfall, resulting in significant damage to infrastructure. Under the CLICK program, substantial funds were allocated to KMC for road repair and maintenance.
Ghani assured that any damage to newly constructed or recently patched roads due to the rains will be investigated, and necessary actions will be taken against those responsible. The minister concluded by reaffirming that as soon as the rains subside, KMC and town administrations will begin an immediate survey to identify areas needing repair, with a commitment to address the issues comprehensively across all phases.
