KARACHI: In a show of solidarity with the demonstrators, Sindh Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani personally engaged with protesters outside the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday. The protest was led by male nursing staff from Lyari Medical College, who voiced their concerns over what they termed as unjust appointments within the institution.
The nursing staff, all residents of Lyari, claimed that the administration had unfairly appointed several individuals to positions at the college and hospital, despite those individuals not being from Lyari or even Karachi. This, they argued, was not only an act of favoritism but also a disservice to the local community that the institution was meant to serve. Upon his arrival, Minister Ghani took the time to listen to the protesters and gather detailed information about their grievances. He acknowledged the seriousness of their concerns and assured them that their legitimate demands would be addressed.
Minister Ghani further committed to bringing the matter to the attention of the Sindh Minister for Health to ensure a swift and fair resolution. The minister’s engagement with the protesters appeared to resonate well, as they peacefully dispersed following his assurances. The crowd, which had been vocally expressing its dissatisfaction, ended the demonstration by chanting slogans in support of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and its chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare workers in the region, particularly those from underprivileged areas like Lyari, who often feel marginalized in the allocation of jobs and resources.
