SUKKUR: In a significant initiative addressing pressing global challenges, Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), in collaboration with USAID and the Center for Peace & Development Initiative (CPDI), organized a two-day conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Climate Justice, and Peace Building in Khairpur. The event was inaugurated by SALU’s Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushik, alongside his counterpart from Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University of Technology and Skill Development, Meritorious Professor Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar.
The conference attracted a diverse group of participants, including students, educators, and civil society members, all eager to engage in critical discussions about climate change and disaster management. Throughout the sessions, various experts, including faculty members and representatives from civil society, presented insights on the multifaceted issues related to climate change and its consequences.
Dr. Yousuf Khushik praised the collaborative efforts of USAID and CPDI, emphasizing the global nature of climate change and its widespread impacts. He noted the alarming increase in monsoon intensity and rising temperatures, attributing these phenomena to ecological damage such as deforestation. “We need policies that effectively address and mitigate the impacts of climate change,” he stated, encouraging students to assume leadership roles in devising solutions. He announced the introduction of a three-hour course on climate change at SALU, aimed at equipping students with knowledge to combat these challenges.
As the chief guest, Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar underscored the disproportionate burden faced by developing nations in the climate crisis. “While we contribute less to climate change, we suffer its effects more than other countries,” he remarked, calling for compensation for the losses incurred. He advocated for bold, sustainable actions and the adoption of eco-friendly technologies to reduce emissions and create job opportunities.
