KARACHI: Students from the Department of Political Science at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, gained direct exposure to legislative processes during an academic study tour to the Sindh Assembly, providing a practical complement to their classroom learning.
Organized under the guidance of Dr. Shahida Begum, head of the department, and supported by the university faculty, the delegation observed a live assembly session from the visitors’ gallery. The students witnessed debates, the question hour, and detailed discussions on legislative matters, offering them firsthand insight into the workings of representative democracy.
“For political science students, understanding the mechanics of a legislature is crucial. This visit provided an unparalleled opportunity to see democratic principles in action,” said Dr. Shahida Begum. She noted that the tour reinforced theoretical knowledge by demonstrating practical parliamentary procedures and governance.
Students expressed that observing the conduct of lawmakers, procedural rules, and the dynamics of political debate significantly enhanced their understanding of how provincial laws are proposed, scrutinized, and enacted.
“This was more impactful than any textbook chapter. Seeing the assembly in session, the arguments, the protocols — it makes the system tangible and deepens our respect for the legislative process,” said one student.
The Department of Political Science reaffirmed its commitment to organizing similar experiential learning initiatives, highlighting their importance in nurturing informed and engaged future citizens and professionals. The visit is part of ongoing efforts to integrate practical exposure with academic growth and promote a deeper understanding of democratic governance among students.
