NAWABSHAH: Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU), Shaheed Benazirabad, in collaboration with the Sindh Higher Education Commission, hosted the first International Media Symposium on “Responsible Journalism in the Era of Digital Transformation: Misinformation, Disinformation, AI Ethics, and Perspectives from Pakistan and the Global Media Landscape.”
The two-day event brought together global experts, academics, journalists, policymakers, and media professionals to discuss emerging challenges in digital media, artificial intelligence, media ethics, and public trust. The symposium aimed to promote responsible journalism, reinforce ethical standards, and foster collaboration between academia and media practitioners.
At the inaugural ceremony, SBBU Vice Chancellor Engineer Prof Dr Madad Ali Shah stressed the importance of ethical journalism in upholding democratic values and public confidence in media institutions. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Dr Tayyaba Zarif, highlighted the role of universities in combating misinformation and navigating digital challenges.
Chief organizer Dr Muhammad Yaseen Morojo emphasized professional responsibility in the AI-driven media landscape. Commissioner Shah Mir Khan Bhutto attended as a special guest, while prominent journalists including Shahzaib Jeelani (Director CEJ), Dr Syed Muhammad Askaree, Ghulam Nabi Morai, Abdul Rauf Shaikh (Deputy Director FIA), M Moosa Gondal (Director Information), Suhail Sangi, and Izhar Soomro shared their perspectives.
International experts Dr Noor Izzati Binti Aziz (University of Malaya, Malaysia) and Dr Muhammad Osama Shafiq (Director, Research and Media Dynamics, UK) spoke on AI ethics, newsroom innovation, misinformation, and regulatory frameworks. Local academics, including Prof Dr Bashir Memon, Prof Dr Asmat Arra, Prof Dr Mujeeb Abro, and Dr Raana Afzaal, presented research-based insights.
