Scholars, poets pay tribute to Shah Bhittai at Karachi Mushaira

KARACHI: The Academy of Letters Sindh Regional Karachi Centre recently held a Seminar cum Mushaira at the Shamshirul Haidery Hall, dedicated to the revered Sufi poet and musical innovator, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. The event gathered scholars, poets, and literary figures from both Urdu and Sindhi traditions, reflecting on Bhittai’s profound impact on poetry and cultural thought.

The event commenced with an academic session led by esteemed scholar Dr. Makhmoor Haidery. Dr. Fatima Hassan, a renowned poet, author, and former professor at Karachi University, delivered the keynote address. Scholars presented in-depth analyses of Bhittai’s life, personality, and philosophy, sharing personal insights and interpretations that underscored his enduring relevance and the deep emotional and intellectual resonance his work continues to inspire. In a heartfelt tribute to the great poet, Syed Anwer Jawaid Hashmi, Safdar Ali Insha, and Siddiq Raaz Advocate honored Shah Bhittai’s legacy through their poetry.

Their verses captured the essence of Bhittai’s teachings, blending reverence with creative expression to convey his universal messages of love, humanity, and spiritual enlightenment. The second session of the evening featured a vibrant Mushaira, presided over by acclaimed poet Akhtar Abdul Razzaq. Notable poets such as Saaduddin Saad, Anjum Jawaid, Nazar Fatmi, Saleem Akkas, Hamid Ali, Syed M. Rafiq Mughal, Dilshad Hussain Khyal, Qamar Jahan, Iqbal Sehwani, Khalid Pervez, Arif Shaikh, Sahab Shaiq, Shujauz Zaman, and Zaeem Arshad participated, presenting poetry that reflected both Shah Latif’s spirit and their own artistic expressions.

The Mushaira, compered by Tanveer Sukhan, showcased contributions in both Urdu and Sindhi, enriching the cultural dialogue of the evening. The gathering also saw participation from poets of the Sindhi Urdu Sangat, highlighting the bilingual depth of the event and further enhancing its cultural significance. This Seminar cum Mushaira served as a profound tribute to Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, providing a platform for contemporary poets and scholars to engage with his legacy and explore his contributions to literature and culture. The event not only celebrated Bhittai’s timeless influence but also fostered a deeper appreciation of his work among the current generation of writers and readers.
