DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The South Eagle Welfare Organization (SEWO), in collaboration with the Institute of Medical Allied and Nursing Sciences (IMAN) and the Gomal Institute of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, has distributed 100 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities in Dera Ismail Khan.
A formal ceremony was held at the two institutions, where 30 individuals received wheelchairs in the first phase. The remaining chairs will be handed out in subsequent phases. SEWO chairperson and former member of the provincial assembly Asiya Saleha Khattak attended as chief guest.
Among those present were SEWO general secretary Hammad Sarim, finance secretary Hussain Ahmed Advocate High Court, social worker Khurshid Bettani, chief executive Malik Ahmed Waseem Dyal, faculty members and students. SEWO volunteer Saleem Baz Kundi also participated and remained a focal point during the event.
Addressing the gathering, Khattak thanked Malik Tahir Waseem Dyal and his institution for their support. She announced that SEWO, with assistance from Dr Baz Muhammad Khan Kundi & Sons, is establishing a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan dedicated to the treatment and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
She noted that Saleem Baz Khan Kundi had provided land for the project. The same group had earlier set up a thalassemia center in the city offering free treatment. Khattak said the proposed hospital aims to serve the district’s large population of persons with disabilities. She observed that Dera Ismail Khan has been heavily affected by terrorism compared with other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
She added that SEWO also plans to establish separate hospitals for eye care and maternal and child health services. “Our mission is to serve humanity,” she said, expressing hope that philanthropists would continue to support the initiative. Columnist Ibn-e-Adam praised the organization’s work, describing support for those who have lost mobility or limbs as especially important in conflict-affected regions.
Malik Tahir Waseem Dyal, chairman of IMAN and the Gomal Institute, said his institution currently supports more than 800 students through scholarships worth millions of rupees. He added that it is actively engaged in social welfare and rural outreach programs. He thanked Khattak and her team, calling the distribution of 100 wheelchairs a meaningful step towards improving the lives of deserving individuals.
